The Khajiit are one of the most distinctive races in Tamriel — feline humanoids native to the province of Elsweyr, shaped by the phases of the twin moons Masser and Secunda. The moons don't just light their nights; they determine what form a Khajiit takes at birth. Depending on the lunar position, a Khajiit may be born as a towering Senche-raht warrior, a small Alfiq cat incapable of speech, or the familiar bipedal Cathay most commonly seen adventuring across Skyrim.

A Culture of Wanderers

Khajiit are famous traders and travelers throughout Tamriel. Their caravans appear outside nearly every major city, selling exotic goods from Elsweyr — moon sugar, skooma (the refined and illegal form), and rare imports from across the continent. This reputation for commerce and, less charitably, for theft, has made them a misunderstood and sometimes persecuted minority in human lands.

The Language of Names

Khajiit names are drawn from Ta'agra, their native tongue. The honorific prefix at the beginning of each name is crucial — it communicates social standing, age, and role at a glance. A Dar is quick-fingered and clever. A Ri commands respect. An S' denotes an adult female. These prefixes aren't titles added later; they're given at naming and stay for life.

The apostrophes in names like J'zargo or Ri'saad represent breaths between syllables — a phonetic feature of Ta'agra that gives Khajiit speech its distinctive lilting quality.
